Amidst the scream about climate change, industries are shifting their direction towards sustainability to produce and fuel the economic scene. The most recent trend that stood up among renewable energies is the use of green hydrogen. The rise of green hydrogen is driven by the potential to harness water, our planet's most abundant resource. Beyond its commitment to climate action, many industry players recognize the long-term benefits of green hydrogen as a new energy source. Outside the reach of sustainable resources, green hydrogen is also an excellent industry in itself for creating new employment potential and enhancing technology utilization. According to IRENA, the increasing use of green hydrogen will lead to an 80% decrease in its cost, thus creating opportunities for profitability in the long run. Of course this sparks interests from several industries relying heavily on energy, one of which is the automotive industry. As quoted from The Guardian, hydrogen is projected to account for 16% of road transport by 2050. The applications of green hydrogen extend far beyond transportation, encompassing various stages of production activities, from research and development to logistics. While the initial investment in green hydrogen may be significant, its long-term value proposition is undeniable. Green hydrogen's potential for safe storage and transportation presents a compelling alternative to lithium-nickel batteries for the automotive industry. This has led to significant interest in developing green hydrogen-powered vehicles and the machinery needed for their production. Companies like Toyota and Hyundai are actively exploring hydrogen vehicles, while Toshiba and Panasonic are making strides in the green hydrogen energy sector. Is Indonesia catching up on the issue? Yes, but significant progress is yet to come in the near future. Indonesia had just officially opened its green hydrogen plant and production across the archipelago at the end of 2023. In partnership with its biggest energy company – PLN – Tempo reported that Indonesia is the biggest producer of green hydrogen in Southeast Asia. Furthermore, Indonesia also has taken some efforts to develop its green hydrogen production into the international market, as soon it reached the nation's expectation of reducing fossil fuels use. In the rising awareness of an environmentally friendly economy scene, green hydrogen is a force to be reckoned with. There is no doubt that it will highlight the automotive industry fast with its competitive advantage. All we can hope today is this sexy resource will empower our transformations into a more sustainable world.
